Boosting your immune system is as easy as 123

October 23, 2020
The current coronavirus pandemic has served as a wake up call for all of us in making us realize the importance of good immunity. Boosting immunity has become a top priority for everyone, globally.

The best way to go about enhancing your immunity is to follow guidelines recommended by WHO and the Ministry of Ayush and follow as many immunity improving habits into our lifestyle as possible. And we have to start doing that as soon as possible. Our mission at this point should be to guard and protect our body against any harmful invaders looking to cause  diseases in our system.

A multi forked approach to get started with is by having health-enhancing foods and immunity boosting nutraceuticals along with adopting habits and behaviours that help guard your immune system.

Here we discuss some easy to adopt ways by which you can elevate your immunity into it’s optimum levels.

Eating right and considering food as the fuel to your body

Good food is everyone’s favourite. It makes us keep going and fuels our body. Food is the ultimate medicine because by eating, we are feeding billions of good bacteria living in our gut. Gut is the area where 70% of our immune system is present.

1. Garlic and onions are your friends: What's the best thing about allium rich veggies apart from the fact that they taste good? Their antiviral and antibacterial properties make them healthy options to have on your table. Your gut thrives on fibre and probiotics and these veggies provide those. Now is the right time to start chopping garlic and onions. Chop chop.

2. Make everyday green: Green leafy veggies provide your system the phytonutrients and fibre it needs to keep your helpful gut bacteria happy. A happy gut means a stronger immune system. You can have salads for dinner or have spinach with eggs in the morning during breakfast. If you’re making smoothies, put some greens into it as well. The goal is to have some greens, everyday.

3. Fermented food: A healthy gut is your best friend against viral enemies. Fermented foods give your gut the probiotics it needs to function at its best. You can add apple cider vinegar to food or have a tablespoon right in the morning. If you don't like the smell of apple cider vinegar, you can do the same with warm water with a bit of lemon juice.

4. Tea is healthy: Wine and beer won’t help you. Tea will. For the next few weeks, switch your alcoholic beverages with herbal tea or green tea which are excellent immunity reinforcements. Pick a tea that has healthy spices like black pepper, tulsi, ginger, cinnamon and mulethi.

5. Spicy meals are good: Just like you pick tea with immunity boosting spices, it’s time to add some taste and health to your food as well, all with a mix of healthy spices. Ginger, cumin, garlic turmeric, cinnamon, clove and black pepper have anti-inflammatory and antiviral benefits. They also help in smooth digestion. Moreover, they take your food a notch up, in terms of taste.

6. A dash of coconut: You can add coconut oil in just about everything, the food you cook, your smoothies or your morning coffee. Coconut oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and also gives your body the healthy fats it requires for optimum functioning.

Supplements and superfoods

Apart from a healthy diet, we recommend some supplements and nutraceuticals as extra support for a healthy immune system. Here is all you need.

7. Dayly Guard  : What if there was a powerful blend that could not only boost your immune system, but also fight the harmful free radicals in your body? Dayly Guard does just that. And much more! It helps protect you against seasonal infection and ensures that you have a healthy respiratory tract and gut. Being rich in extracts in active form from turmeric, ginger, papaya leaf and black pepper, Dayly Guard not only strengthens your innate and adaptive immune system, but also fights free radicals and supports healthy liver, heart and lungs. It also has Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D, some elements known worldwide for powering up one’s immunity.

8. Probiotics: When choosing a probiotic, go for the one that supports gut health and has several good bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus. Probiotics give your gut the friendly bacteria it needs for optimum functioning. Curd is another superfood that you can add to your diet to increase not only your digestion but also your immunity.

9. Fish Oil : Want to keep your immunity defense system strong? Take 1-2 g dosage of high quality fish oil daily. See to it that it has Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Also it shouldn’t contain any fillers.

10. Spirulina: Spirulina is a type of healthy bacteria growing in both fresh and saltwater. It has antiviral properties and also boosts your immune system.

While we have discussed the things you should add to your diet and everyday routine, let’s look at the one thing we must all ditch today.

11. Ditching processed food and sugar: If we were to define sugar in a word, it would be, trash. If viruses are already present in your body, sugar will make you sick quickly because by consuming sugar you are not feeding the good gut bacteria but overfeeding the bad viruses. Processed foods are the same when it comes to the gut. They weaken your immunity with chemicals and allergy causing agents. Moreover they aren’t powering any nutrients to your immune system’s bug fighting abilities. If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to get rid of junk food and sugar from your table

It's not just what you put inside your body that matters when it comes to boosting immunity. Treating your body in a healthy manner is another way in the multi forked process we talked about. Sleeping right i.e 7-8 hours a day, being stress free, washing your hands frequently, keeping well hydrated and getting some sunlight are just some of the many small ways you must follow to improve your gut health and boosting your immunity while doing so.
